Porterville College volleyball head coach Dale Henderson has compiled another challenging schedule to prepare the Pirates for high expectations.
The three-time Central Valley Conference runners-up will open the season defending its championship title at the Modesto Junior College Tournament on Aug. 29.
The team will also face a pair of playoff contenders at the Sacramento Classic (Sept. 5) against Sacramento and Sierra from the tough Big 8 Conference.
After a trip to Cuesta (Sept. 10), PC will play in the Cabrillo Classic (Sept. 20) to take on American River and defending state-champ Cabrillo.
"It's as tough as any schedule can get," Henderson said.
"Our goal is to compete at the highest level. If we play well, we earn respect and prepare our team for a tough conference season."
The Central Valley Conference begins Sept. 24, when the Pirates host perennial CVC power Taft.
That weekend, PC will travel to the L.A. Pierce College Tournament, where last season the team made a splash beating Bakersfield and taking Golden West and San Diego Mesa to four games.
The CVC slate resumes Oct. 1 with a home match against West Hills, before the Pirates play three straight on the road against Reedley, Columbia and Sequoias.
Matches with seven-time defending CVC champ Fresno are Oct. 15 (home) and Nov. 12 (away).
Over the last three seasons in conference play, only the Rams have posted a winning record against the Pirates. PC is 36-0 against all other opponents during that stretch.
PC returns All-CVC players Meranda Watkins (2013 Player of the Year runner-up), Melissa Vernon, and Vianey Gonzalez. The Pirates were 17-9 last season and 12-2 in the CVC. They finished ranked No. 8 in the North and No. 16 overall in the State.
Henderson said that all youth wearing their PC Summer Volleyball Camp shirt will be admitted free to all home games.
More volleyball news and special promotions will be announced soon.
