Pirates hang on for 5-3 win at COS
VISALIA — Ethan Chavez threw six strong innings and Zayne Thornton drove in three runs as Porterville College rolled to a 5-3 Central Valley Conference victory at College of the Sequoias on Wednesday.
Chavez improved to 2-4, allowing two earned runs on seven hits while striking out one over six innings. Chris Blanco closed it out with three innings of one-run ball, earning his third save of the season.
Thornton went 3-for-5 with two doubles and three RBIs, providing run support throughout the game. He singled home Tyler Stansberry in the third, doubled him in again in the fifth and added another run-scoring double in the ninth to push the lead to 5-3.
Noe Isaiah Guzman also had a big day at the plate, going 2-for-2 with two doubles and two RBIs. He gave Porterville a 1-0 lead with a run-scoring double in the second and extended the advantage to 4-0 with another double in the sixth.
The Pirates scored in five of nine innings but needed to hold off a three-run Sequoias seventh that pulled the visitors within one before Porterville tallied an insurance run in the ninth.
Porterville improved to 11-27 overall and 4-18 with the win. The Pirates are back in action on Thursday (Apr. 23) at 2 p.m. when they host Taft College in their 2026 home finale.
