The Porterville College softball team swept a double-header from visiting Coalinga College on Tuesday afternoon.
Both wins featured a plethora of action and drama.
First, the Pirates rallied from an early 8-0 deficit and won Game 1, 10-9, on a seventh inning walk off single by Porterville High alum Morgynn Wylie.
Game 2 was dominated by Monache High product Alexandrea Andrighetto, who hurled a complete game, 2-0, shutout.
Porterville went into the final inning of the first game against Central Valley Conference opponent Coalinga trailing, 9-6, before freshman Avery Hupp lined a bases loaded triple to the right/centerfield gap to tie the game. One batter later Wylie laced a hard ground ball down the third baseline to give the Pirates a thrilling victory.
PC provided Andrighetto all the offense she needed in the first inning of Game 2 when Cerenity Perez and Klarissa Manrriquez smacked back-to-back RBI singles.
From there Andrighetto (4-9) cruised the victory, allowing only four hits, all singles. Meanwhile the Pirates defense was stellar, committing zero errors in a game for only the third time this season.
Andrighetto, who started game 1 but was lifted early in the contest, made quick work of the Falcons in Game 2, wrapping up the win in just 85 minutes. The freshman right-hander had two strikeouts and issued a pair of walks.
Despite not scoring a run, Coalinga didn't go down in Game 2 without a fight. After Andrighetto retired the first batter of the inning the Falcons Maleah Duran Ojeda and Breanna Cisneros hit consecutive singles. But after inducing Coalinga's Rylie Williams into flying out to short right field, Andrighetto coaxed Emilee Morabito into hitting a routine grounder to third that Elli John turned into an unassisted fielder's choice out, ending the threat.
Wylie, Porterville's leadoff hitter and starting shortstop, finished the doubleheader 4-for-7 with a walk, two runs, and a RBI.
John went 4-for-4 in Game 1 and ended the day with five hits, two runs, and two RBI.
Perez tallied four hits and a team-high four RBI in the two games.
The Pirates are off the rest of the week for Spring Break. They return to action on Tuesday afternoon when they travel to play Coalinga for the final time this season. PC's next home game is Thursday, April 9, at 2 p.m. against Fresno City College.
PC currently sits just two games out of third place in the CVC standings.
