PORTERVILLE --- With its roster down to just six available players on Wednesday, Porterville College put together an outstanding effort but faltered late in a 70-64 loss to visiting No. 16 state-ranked West Hills College Lemoore in both teams' Central Valley Conference opener.
The Pirates scored 22 points in the third quarter to take a narrow 51-48 advantage into the last period. But the Golden Eagles (11-5, 1-0 CVC) outscored PC 22-13 over the final 10 minutes to snatch the victory away.
Mia Pengilly posted a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Pirates while Kaija Ambriz totaled 17 points. Cienna Enriquez had 14 points and 8 rebounds while Jazlynne Medrano also scored 14 points and added 4 steals and 3 assists.
Porterville fell to 1-12 overall and 0-1 in the CVC. The Pirates are scheduled to play at College of the Sequoias next on Jan. 22 at 5 p.m.
